Depending on how you approach the experience, you have the opportunity to meet a large number of potential employers in an afternoon, get your resume 'out there', gain a great deal of experience dealing with prospective employers, get some immediate feedback, and start building a network with other job hunters that might lead to offers down the road.

It depends - I've heard of job fairs where no one was really hiring - with a lot of outfits, it's just something that they put on every year, no matter what. Even if the job market is crappy. If no one is really hiring, don't get your expectations too high. Things are actually starting to look better now, and there are more positions to be filled now than at this time two or three years ago. So you may have some good luck if you go to one now. I wouldn't have said that two or three years ago....
