The Indy 500 was established long before there were formal racing leagues, classes or circuits in the US. The original participants would have been guys who raced "run what you brung" at county fairs etc. Memorial Day weekend was always a great time for parades etc. in Indiana, so the race was held then. No one was really thinking back then about a racing "season" or who would be the winner of the season. They just raced when and where they could, and Indy was the #1 venue.

It's tradition that Indy be run on Memorial Day weekend. That's the way it was when the race started and the track was built. It's the third or fourth race on the IRL schedule, so it gives teams a chance to run their cars on other tracks before they take them all to Indy. However, the schedule is cleared for the month of May so that all teams can take quite a few laps around the track before qualifying and see what they have. But it's just tradition. If it was the last race on the schedule, the series would start in September and run through the winter. Too cold to do that !

it's NOT run at the beginning of the season, it's run in the middle, on memorial day weekend, because of tradition. maybe you're thinking of the daytona 500. that's run at the beginning of the NASCAR season. again, because of tradition.

on a related note, i have an interesting bit of indy 500 trivia for ya. have you ever noticed the cartoon balloons on a package of wonder bread? well, wonder bread was the first packaged sliced bread, and the 2 marketing reps who were trying to come up with a name for the new bread were at the indy 500 years ago. when they released the thousands of balloons into the air before the race like they do every year, one of them looked at the other and said "wow! what a wonder!". that's how wonder bread got it's name and that's why wonder bread has always had those balloons on the package and still do to this day. that's a true story.
