The traditional reason was, it was farming season. In the past summer was farming season and the schools had to let the kids out of school for the few good weeks of the season so they would be able to help their parents out. As back then there wasnt alot of people to do the farming and most families couldnt afford to hire help. The schools had no choice but to close to allow the kids to go to tend to their families. Over the years society has sifted into a non-farming world and there really is no reason for kids to have a summer break anymore and most states are trying to get it changed. Alot of them have already made summers shorter and some have gone to year round school.

I believe way back when family's had big farms and raised much of what they ate (and sold some as well) children were out of school for the summer so they could work in the family's gardens and then help with the harvest.

Hi Chris, yes you are right but it had little to do with schools, It goes back much further when people relied on the harvest to survive the rest of the year and pay a tithe to their overlord.

Later in time we have Mother's day. This was apparently called apprentice day originally and it was the one day of the year set aside for servants and apprentices to go home to visit their families.

I think it started when there were so many people living on farms. Of course it makes sense that people can not learn as well when it is sweltering.
Other than that, of course, it may be so parents will come to really appreciate those months when children are occupied with school!!!
