Lush is right. You're told not to eat or drink to ensure that your stomach is empty. You could vomit during the operation and they don't want anything going into your windpipe.
You can jerk off the night before. In fact, you can do it in the car as you drive to the hospital. No one will be able to tell, and it's probably good to get one in before you shut down during healing. I suggest you try to avoid impure thoughts during healing. No trying to peak down the nurses top when she leans over to examine it. Sports stats. That's it. Think sports stats.
Follow their directions for aftercare. Keep yourself clean. You don't want an infection. On the plus side... the skin of the penis heals quickly.

i've assisted in more than 50 circumcision but they were kids below 10 years old.
if the doctor is planning general anesthesia where you will sleep you can't eat.
there is no specific preparation to follow like diet and such.
1. you will lie down on bed,
2. an topical anesthetic is applied first and then a injection of another kind of anesthetic is used. you will stay awake but won't feel anything in your groin area. nothing. not a thing.
3. the doctor would retract the loose skin with a forcep.
4. he would make an incision and snip away some of the skin. he won't take it off! he would just fold it (imagine peeling a banana with the covering at the bottom).
5. a suture is then made to hold the peeled skin together.
(advise: get the cut where all the foreskin is peeled away...makes for a better looking pen*s)
when you get home and the anesthetics wears off.
1. it may sting a bit, urination might burn A LITTLE.
2. buy a betadine liquid soap to clean it with during bath time. YOU CAN TAKE A BATH. A SHOWER IS BETTER THAN A TUB BATH.
3. an ointment might be prescribe so you can apply that AFTER PATTING IT DRY.
4. for more comfort wear a skirt around the house and schedule the operation when you don't have to work and go out of the house.
5. some redness, swelling are normal. the sutures would be absorbed into the skin and everything will be back to normal in a week!
good luck!

i'm sorry you have to do this in adulthood! my son who is 6 yrs had this done yesterday week, so let me tell what happened. you can drink water until about 1am and eat till midnight of the day before. do not drink/eat anything at all after that because the anesthaetic will make you sick. and no you do not need to shave since they will be operating on the end part not where the hair is. and anyway, if they need to shave the assisting nurse will do it there and then. good luck.
it is the after care which is more important probably. we were told that it is very important to keep it as clean and dry as possible. we used betadine in the bath and got the little guy to soak up in the bath for at least 15 minutes every day and then applied hydrocortisyl cream after drying off. it is a week + 1 day since his op and he has healed nicely with no complications.
One more comment, my little one was scared to pee after the op cause he thought it will burn, but i suggested that he sit down on the loo (like a girl!) and pee like that. that way he didn;t have to touch anything - meaning the swelling and the stitches - and he was fine with it. for the first time in years he could actually pee comfortably and at one go.

As with any surgical procedure that involves anaesthesia you should not eat or drink anything 12 hours before as you may vomit before the aneasthatist has place (and then removed) the ET tube - the tube that delivers the gases.
Vomiting in this instance can have serious consiquences.

no don't need to shave. i wasn't when i got done (3 year ago) if only going under local then water should be fine. if general then no, no food or drink. don't have to avoid any types of food. it's just so you have no reaction to the anesthetic and won't .... go all over the operating table when u have no feeling down there.

you wont need to shave, no drink 6 hours before you go in, but i have rinsed my mouth with water just to moisten it a couple of hours before, you can do normal things the day before, but i would avoid alcohol and smoking, get painkillers in,paramol are excellent and cheaper than prescription, as you will be a bit sore, good luck

If this is a medical circumcision, you should contact the urologist who will be performing the procedure and approach them with these questions. If your circumcision is for religious conversion, then you should contact the rabbi (if Jewish) or imam (if Moslem) with whom your are studying, and ask them to refer you to a qualified and experienced practitioner. In any case, undergoing circumcision is a serious matter. I'd suggest seeking guidance from a qualified professional (medical, religious, etc.), and not depending only on Yahoo Answers.
Good luck!

You must not eat or dink anything for the time they say as you are obviously having general anaesthetic - and nothing means nothing I'm afraid.
As for shaving I wouldn't think it necessary particularly if they haven't mentioned anything yet.

you can't drink water as water makes you go to the toilet and being this kind of surgery, it may be painful or interrupt the surgery.... drink lots the day before to keep yourself hydrated and well and if you do need shaving they should have told you or they might ask you to do that on arrival... i hope it all goes well
