Is there a maximum age that someone can work as a lifeguard?
I know its age-ism (or age discrimnination) but surely someone in their 40's can't be as alert as one in their 20's - it hapens with pilots, drivers, sports etc

Just wonder does someone know what the rule is in various countries
Thanks

Nope. No age limit. You have to pass the test and the interview.

Consider the fact that a young woman drowned recently in a *public* pool with several young lifeguards standing around and I think it's time to stop hiring teenagers. Not real alert were they?

My own pool has a manager/lifeguard in his 50's or 60's and at least 2 people over 40 that lifeguard.

There was a Hawaiian beach lifeguard who just retired in his late 40's and he was a senior guard at one of the most dangerous beaches on the planet on Oahu's North Shore. Huge swells, 300 yard swim to get to victim... I'd feel completely safe under his watch.

With age comes wisdom. My buddy George is 67 and he's the oldest active lifeguard I know. He also instructors lifeguarding, WSI, CPR, etc for the Red Cross.

As long as the body is physically able to pass the required tests to be a lifeguard there is no age limit.

I personally would rather have an older guard at the pool. High school and college kids don't take their jobs seriously and are usually not very attentive. And I can say this because I've been there, on the guard side and the director side.

There is no age limit on being a lifeguard. As long as a person is fit enough to pass the lifeguard requirements. You can view lifeguard requirements for all lifeguard courses by going to http://www.Lifeguard-Pro.org and clicking "Certification Courses". Many employers prefer older more responsible lifeguards. The pay for lifeguarding is best at hotels, resorts, and condo complexes. For all your lifeguarding certification answers, just go to http:www.Lifeguard-Pro.org.

My mom has been managing a pool for 10 yrs, and we have had no lifeguard past 43 years old. SO I think that maybe past 40 or 35, but that's time to stop! Good luck, hope this helps!
