This question will get many flames from both sides.

An apple is more secure for work and internet ussage. You can also get windows installed on it. Generally apple is worth the money that you pay for it. (at least when compared to dell)

For design and basic stuff apple comes out top with many good applications. But there is sometimes greater diversity on windows. But with a mac you can dualboot. All macs come with wireless and bluetooth.

Windows vista has many problems at the moment as many software is not availible for it currently. So there fore many virus and firewalls are not ready yet. (comodo has only just been released {good firewall})

Vista has a lot of DRM on it and can slow the laptop down a lot. It also takes up a LOT of ram so be careful. Ask this question on a forum for apples and a forum for pc's and see the awnsers you get and compare. Hope this helps.

Depends on what your needs are.
But as far as I'm saying, get a laptop with vista.

If you've had a laptop or a pc with windows on it, you'll be more familiar with things. With a ibook, its a whole different way of computing. Buy a laptop with vista.
My Recommended specs:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo T5600 (2 x 1.83 ghz)
RAM: 1 GB or 2 GB
GRAPHICS CARD: ATI Mobilty Radeon X1700
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium
SCREEN SIZE: 15" or 17"
HARD DRIVE: 100 GB or 125 GB

Ugh, Vista is such a rubbish OS that I'd almost dare suggest you go get a Mac, if you're dead set on buying one or the other. Until MS takes the time to fix some of the gaping loopholes in Vista's code, you're better off with the tried-and-true MacOS.

I just went through the same decision, I went with the Dell XPS M1210 running Vista Home Premium. Love it. I think Vista really does have a more clean cut interface than XP did. Yes there are a few bugs, but just keep your auto-updates enabled and you should do fine.

Most definitely the Macbook. iBookwas the older name for apples laptops, the newer one being "MacBook" .The base model starts at £750 in the UK.

It comes supplied with ALL the software you'll need for basic photo-editing, cataloguing and slideshows in iPhoto, iTunes music jukebox (you dont have to use the subscription or buy from it to use it as the BEST mp3 jukebox out there- you can just rip cds to mp3, Text editor (for word processing which will recognise and write to basic Microsoft word files.), Garageband (music creation and ipod casting software), Calendars, DVD-movie creating software etc etc.

For basic tasks you wont find any better.

I feel that this bundled software justifies the relatively high initial investment, but the 1.8ghz and 2.0 ghz dualcore 2 processors in Apples Macbook range are top of the line. The equivalent priced Sony laptops are only around 1.6 ghz in speed and do not contain ANY of this type of software which is genuinely easy to use and relativley dynamic.

The Macbooks are also very small and lightweight and are perfect for carrying around.

There isnt as much software around for the mac in comparison to PC, which would mean that if you wanted to go into more advanced photoshop editing you would need to buy the full pro version at £500 whereas on the pc you could buy something like Paint Shop Pro for around £60. photoshop is creatively superior but for the majority of uses they are very comparable. Photoshop is much stabler though. There is Photoshop Elements 4 for the mac at around £50 and Photoshop Elements 5 for the PC at around the same price, which is a cut-down version but still very powerfull. I use E5.

The hardware itself is generally very reliable, well made and design-wise miles ahead of any competitors.

I have used both formats at design school and college (and I currently use a 2 year old HP Windows XP latop which has been good to me for photoshop, music editing and basic net and writing) but I would invest in the Apple if i was to be making a new investment.

You could also look at "Bootcamp" and "parralels" which emulates the windows operating sytem within a mac, enabling you to run both PCs at the same time, altho I do not know abouts its speed nor stability.

Windows PC laptops tend to be cheaper for the most basic systems (around £350-450 for a 1.4ghz model), have faster CDR/W and DVDR/W drives and have a greater amount of software. They have the market share so publishers are more willing to publish software on them, knowing that they are highly likely to make a pretty penny. They would come with MS Word and MediaPlayer, but ive used Media player and i think its too complicated and looks naff.

get plenty of feedback from other users, have a look at both macs and pcs, and think about what money you are wanting to spend and why,

goodluck with your choice.

iBook is for people who use it for video making in the highest quality. If you're looking for basic stuff, I would say go for Windows.

And the reason why there isn't any threats to Apple is because no one has bothered to make any viruses, worms, etc. for Apple because they figure Apple users suffer enough.

Go to the nearest Apple Store and take one for a test drive. You will be very surprised.

Windows will not be malware free anytime soon. OS X and Linux is, so far.

Then, decide for yourself.

TIP: I use OS X, Linux and Windows in that order.

Get a MacBook, and do a boot-camp setup. You get Mac and Vista. Just make sure you get a lot of RAM (around 2GB, 1GB if money's tight)
