Meditation is an art of transcending your several layers of consciousness starting from the physical, breathing, mind, wisdom and ananda. It starts with yoga abhyas (physical practises), pranayama (breathing), and dharana and dhyana. You should try to visualise your self in the form of a fire flame or in the form of your Ishta and keep on visualising. Once you are attuned to that image even for a few seconds, you should be deemed to have attained the purpose of meditation. It is a big ocean, to swim which you should the help of a Guru.

Meditation relaxes your mind and gives one peace. But if it is done after being initiated by a TRUE Saint, enables one to go within and get ENLIGHTENED! This practice also leads one to Dying while Living! It is best taught by a Living Master.
