It doesn't matter, but it could be off-putting to the person you're speaking to.

Instead of saying "uh", try this trick. Think of what you want to say before you open your mouth. I know this sounds simplistic, but instead of the "uh", you are using thoughtful pauses.

In addition, take a speech class. Many people wrongly assume speech classes teach you HOW to talk, as in proper pronunciation. This is not true. It actually teaches the art of public speaking. You'll find you will always use the tricks taught in this class.

It does when you are giving a speech. You want the audience to think you know what you're talking about. If you say "uh" too much, their attention drifts away from what you are saying and you're not seen as creditable. If you start to use "uh" take a deep breath then continue on. Also practice, practice, practice!!

It does effect what people think of what you have to say. People assume it must not be very intelligent if it's coming from a person that can't articulate quickly. Although that is more likely, it is not necessarily the case, just a common prejudice.

Even if the people you are talking to know you to be intelligent, it would still seem like you were trying to make sense of what you were saying, that you haven't yet fully grasped the ideas that you were sharing. Perhaps, that you had other things on your mind.

Still, people are less likely to agree with what you are saying, if you stop to think, stutter, or act in any way that you are not sure of what you are saying.

It drives me nuts when people say "uh" and "umm" a lot. No offense to anyone, but it makes people sound so uneducated. I know people do it because they're just trying to take a second to put their thought together, or think of the right word, but I can't help that it bothers me. I had a Psych professor who said "uhhhh" after every sentence. I couldn't even listen to what he was saying because it was so annoying. Same goes for chicks who say "like" alot. It drives me nuts!

It depends on how and how often you say it. It can get annoying after the 10th "uh" in one sentence. A professional speaker avoids it at all costs, but even the best let it slip once in a while.
