They make their money by the paid averts you also see on their search results.
Also, on people's web pages, you often see adverts which are run by Google (adsense) and Yahoo etc.
Websites pay to appear on pages that have relevant keywords. The people that have adverts on their pages get a percentage and Google/Yahoo etc get the rest.

If Google charge you an arm and a leg for your site advertisement, you won't use its service, right? Its pay-per-click might cost you like approximately only $50 per month, or let's say 1 click costs you 20cents. But when you search in google, there are millions are search results. Majority of the people will click through at least 5 links in the search results. And people use search engines more than once a day. So, let's do that math for just the average bare minimum 2 million people * 5 searches click per day * 20 cents per click = $2,000,000 per day just from pay per click advertisements. In 2005, 6billions came from ads out of the total revenue 6.2 billion. There are other way of getting money like database service that they offer and stocks and other partnership with big companies.

It's my understanding they make it by advertisements. Some search engines may even charge for people to list their websites/information.

Advertising.
Search Engines aren't actually providing a search process to the public, they're selling the public's attention to advertisers.

Advertising, and sponsered search results...
Say your searching with google, when you search for something the results page return with blue shaded results at the top (sponsered results not based on hits) and normal white shaded results beneath the blue ones (results based on hits)
hope that helps ^_^
