Is the relationship between Bert and Ernie from Seaseme Street simply two guys sharring an apartment, or did they actually, originally intend to have them represent a same-sex couple. The entire basis of the show is centered around diversity and accepting people, more than anything else, so it makes you wounder...

Room mates.
Just because 'characters' live together doesn't make them lovers.

Bert and Ernie were just best buddies who lived together. There was no hanky panky going on.

The tragedy is that conservative people made such a big fuss about it being a homosexual relationship that Sesame Street separated the two, which is just silly.

They were just best friends.

The Religious Right likes to use the idea that Bert and Ernie were in gay relationship as way to impose gay agenda on young boys.

The rumors of them being gay is an urban legend. Check out:

...but if they were gay, it'd be OK!

Check out the musical "Avenue Q" that has similar puppets that sing the song "If You Were Gay" - sung by two puppets, Nicky and Rod:

I always kinda thought Bert & Ernie were more like a puppet version of Felix Unger & Oscar Madison from "The Odd Couple."

they are simply roommates.ernie seems to think that bert is his best friend but bert can't stand ernie and his random outbursts of singing.sometimes when ernie is singing that annoying song with his rubber ducky, it looks as if bert is about to punch ernie in the face.ernie doesn't seem very considerate as he sings a bedtime song very loudly when bert is trying to sleep.i think the theme is about friendship and how to tolerate one another with patience & understanding, even if your friend is a jerk.

lets see the show was designed for educational purposes for children. Then us insecure adults come along and have to put a sexual identity to it. WHY? its a show, It has nothing to with anything sexual..... whats wrong with people holy crap. people are discusting, maybe those people assuming crap like that should go jack off first. ITS FOR CHILDREN, CHILDREN DONT HAVE ANY CARE OR UNDERSTANDING OF SEXUALITY. THEY KNOW THE DIFFERENT BETWEEN A GIRL AND A BOY but non of the sexual nonsense even pertains to to them, SHAME ON THE PEOPLE THAT ARE RIPPING THE INNOCENTS OUT OF THIS TOPIC!
