There are some things you can try, but without being able to control the transmitter you may have little success.

Wireless 802.11b has been sent successfully at 51 miles!
I run a wireless isp and have customers out as far as 10 miles so yes line of site works as long as the signal holds up!

The transmitting antenna is what has to be "visible" if it is shielded by walls etc you may not have much success. If it is outside then you should be able to use it. You will need a high end radio system like Tranzeo, Motorola, Defacto wireless. These have radios built into high gain (up to 24db) antennas. They can reach very high distances (we have used them at 15 miles - little slower than closer but still working!)

Here are some sites
http://tranzeo.com http://defactowireless.com http://echotechwireless.com

visit them and look for CPE (cusomter premise equipment) And Good Luck!

i as quickly as observed that folk placed an aluminum foil reflector by potential of their router to point the sign the place they had to attain it. it form of sounds like there grew to become right into an internet site with a trend you would be able to desire to get carry of to make the reflector. or consistent with probability it grew to become into some thing you place on the antenna to point the sign to the place you needed it beamed to. besides, the individuals claimed it incredibly helped.

Perhaps the link below might help.
This place sells outdoor antennas.

(Strangely enough, they don't mention anything about an approximate maximum range for their antennas.)

existing equipments can give you 50KM at maximum, you need an outdoor type router and a high gain antenna to beam that signal to your location.
