Similar figures have the same _shape_, but not necessarily the same _size_. Corresponding sides of similar figures are _proportional_.

a flag casts a shadow 10 ft long. if a man 6ft tall casts a shadow 4ft long at the same time of day, how tall is the flagpole?
x / 6 = 10 / 4 => x = 15, so the flag is 15ft tall.

a photograph is 25 cm wide and 20 cm high. it must be reducced to fit a space that is 8 cm high. find the width of the reduced photograph?
x/25 = 8/20 => x = 10, so the width is 10cm.

give 3 equivalent fraction.
3/10 = 6/20 = 9/30 = 12/40
2/7 = 4/14 = 6/21 = 8/28

is the set of ratios a proportion? yes or no.
8/14 9/20
No, 9/8 ≠ 20/14.

6/18 5/15
Yes, both equal to 1/3.

25/40 12/16
No, they simplify to 5/8 and 3/4 respectively.

find the value of x.
3/8 = 6/X
Cross-multiply: 3X = 6×8 = 48 => X = 48/3 = 16.

4/X = 2/9
X = 9×4/2 = 18.

6/20 = X/18
X = 27/5

3 out of 21 = 1/7
6:20 = 3/10

A flag casts a shadow 10 ft long. if a man 6ft tall casts a shadow 4ft long at the same time of day, how tall is the flagpole?

6:4 = 3:2
therefore x:10 is 15:10, the flagpole is 15ft tall

A photograph is 25 cm wide and 20 cm high. it must be reduced to fit a space that is 8 cm high. find the width of the reduced photograph?

20:8 is 5:2, therefore
25:x = 25:10, the width is 10cm

Give 3 equivalent fraction.

3/10 = 6/20 = 9/30 = 12/40

2/7 = 4/14 = 3/21 = 4/28

Is the set of ratios a proportion? Yes or No.

8/14 = 9/20?
No (4/7 ; 9/20)

6/18 5/15
Yes (1/3 = 1/3)

25/40 12/16
No (5/8 ; 3/4)

Find the value of x.

3/8 = 6/X
x = 16

4/X = 2/9
x = 18

6/20 = X/18
x = 5.4

Final test!

Write each ratio as a fraction in lowest terms.

3 out of 21
3:21 = 1:7

6:20
6:20 = 3:10

similar figures have the same Shape, but not necessarily the same size. corresponding sides of similar figures are in proportion.
a flag casts a shadow 10 ft long. if a man 6ft tall casts a shadow 4ft long at the same time of day, how tall is the flagpole
Let the height of flag pole be x then ratio of height and length of shadow is same.
Therefore x/4 = 6/4
x = 15 ft. height of flagpole
a photograph is 25 cm wide and 20 cm high. it must be reducced to fit a space that is 8 cm high. find the width of the reduced photograph
Ratio of width and height of original size and new size is equal
Let new width be x
so 25/20 = x/8
x = 10 cm.
