I was always taught never to throw rubbish, chewing gum etc. anywhere but the bin. If there was no bin I was taught to take my rubbish home with me. I get so angry when I see people throwing rubbish out of car windows, or just throwing it on the ground. Would people do this in their own homes? We don't want Britain to be like a third world country with rubbish lining the streets!!!!
How can this problem be tackled?

Maybe we could bring in stiffer penalties like Singapore.

Earl, I don't think the collections are the problem. It's just down to individuals with bad habits who prefer to put their litter on the streets.

After all this lovely weather there has been a massive increase in the amount of litter left on our beautiful beaches despite the presence of many bins. I think it's a total lack of respect for others and another sign of how selfish people have become. Instead of employing all the litter pickers they should introduce hefty on the spot fines - I'd do the job!

true - i live in a village, and it's totally spoilt by people dropping litter everywhere..... my parents also taught me that u should always take your rubbish home with u if u can't find a bin, and now i'm teaching the same thing to my 4 year old son. he never drops rubbish on the floor, he hands it to me. (which is why i usually have pockets full of rubbish !!) i think that the way to tackle this problem is for more to be done about it at school.... when i was a kid, we did a whole project on looking after the environment, and why litter was not only unsightly, but also dangerous, both for people (broken glass, etc, ) and for wildlife. we were each given a bin bag, and one of those mechanical grabber things that sometimes u see people using to pick up litter with, and we were given the task of clearing up the rubbish in an area in our town. i think if kids had to pick up the mess like that, they wouldn't be so keen to throw their rubbish on the floor anymore.
what annoys me as much as the litter dropping is when dog owners let their dogs cr*p all over the pavements, field and parks... i am forever having to tell my son to 'mind the dog poo'. having a pet is kind of like having a child. u are responsible for their behaviour. we wouldn't allow our kids to cr*p all over the place, so why do people think that it's ok to let their dogs do that ? is it really so difficult to pick up after your pet ? there should be more done to tackle this issue. like an advertising campaign on TV, and more dog poo bins.

I agree with you. It's a disgrace. It seems that children are no longer taught to respect anyone or anything. I don't think stiffer penalties would work because the police are too busy with other more serious crimes to be able to enforce litter laws. It would be a bit like the mobile phone laws; I still see many people using a mobile phone while driving and the law on this matter in unenforceable.

My parents taught me the very same, I cannot believe the amount of people who drop litter on the floor it makes me so angry.
Everyday in my garden i have to pick up other people waste because they cannot be bothered to put it in the bin.
We have a £50 fine if you are caught in out town centre, but still people do it.
Take a look at the link bellow on the BBC website this morning about much the same problem on our beaches.

Generally civil niceties are being eroded. People don't realise that they have 'rights' but also responsibilities.
This is an age old problem and I don't know what to do either.
I live in a country lane and people come to dump their household waste in the hedgerows.
