Im 17 now but I want to drive there legally.What do I need to do?

An international driver's license and a car. You can rent the latter, but not the former.

Also remember to double check with the nearest Japanese embassy or consulate whether you have to be 18 to drive there, and don't forget that they drive on the left.

Gotta be 18, but I think you had to have been 18 for a certain amount of time. International drivers license.
Do you really wanna drive? Traffic is horrendous, parking space is near nil, parking fees are crazy. The metro'll get you practically anywhere faster and cheaper.

Would just like to point out that unless you are used to driving in downtown London, Beijing or Singapore it is suicide to drive in Japan.

Also, very expensive, parking can equal the cost of rent in some areas.

You can get an IDP if you are 18 and licensed in your own country. Your IDP is good for your first six months in Japan, then you can take the test and get a Japanese driver's license.

My friend got a international driver's license from AAA...I know...it's not DMW...it's AAA.
