I've driven to Las Vegas from every road into town there is. Many times. I used to live there, and some of my family still lives there.
No matter which way you drive from it's all desert - hot and dry, and it will take many hours to get there.
Once you get away from all the casinos (the "strip") or the downtown area, Las Vegas is pretty much like any other big city (there are over 1 million people that live there). There are houses, grocery stores, malls, schools, parks. It's hotter than most cities ('cause it's in the desert).
I'm not sure why you would be scared.

My husband and I go there 2-3 times a year and are moving there this summer.
We drive from Utah, and I have driven once from California, the San Diego area.
And both ways was fine. It's not a bad drive depending on where you are coming from and what time of year.
Coming from California was really actually pretty nice. I had heard horror stories about the traffic and all that. But, it wasn't bad at all, actually pretty mellow and relaxing. The dessert is hot coming through Mohave, but, just make sure to take lots of water and stop along the way and let your car cool down if it gets too hot. And there aren't too many gas stations along the way once you get into the Mohave. So make sure to get plenty of gas when you can. Otherwise, that side was fine.
The Utah side depends on the time of year. Not so much once you actually get into Nevada, but depending on the time of year, all through Utah can be unpredictable. As far as weather. We have driven from Salt Lake to Las Vegas various times of the year. And if you are coming anytime between Nov. to about the end of May, it's possible to encounter some crazy storms in the canyon areas. We have had white out conditions before in some of the canyons in March and April. Even though it might be fine around the cities and valleys.
In the summer and late spring and early fall the roads are perfect.
And the traffic is pretty good. No real problems to complain about there.
So again, I think it just depends on what time of year you go, and what path you are taking. I wish I knew where you were driving from. That would help.
Anyway, once you get into Vegas, it's great. The weather is usually pretty good. Somedays they can get windy, but, it's better than snow and ice. Summer is hot, but, it's a dry heat, so for us, we love that. Rather be hot than cold. The strip is the strip. Lots of lights, noise, traffic conjestion and lots of fun. Personally we love it, and when we move there, we will probably be a little different from alot of people that live there and visit the strip on occasion.
But, you have to realize, that the strip is an approximately 8 mile peice of road in the middle of a huge city. And this city is just like any other city when you get away from the strip.
We have family that lives there. Have their whole life. And we have spent so much time there that we don't just stay on the strip now when we visit. And have come to find that the rest of the city is just like anywhere else. There are good parts of town, and bad parts of town, shopping malls, grocery stores, churches, schools, and everything else that you would find anywhere else. And people do what people do. They live. They go to work and school, movies, take out the garbage, go grocery shopping, to the park, or whatever they like. And most never even go to the strip unless they have out of town visitors or go to a show.
Otherwise, life is just the usual. And you will make friends and do just what you are doing now. But, it's nice all year round. Sure it gets a little colder in the winter, but, there is no snow and ice and bad roads. And if you like sunshine they get about 300+ days a year of that. Hardly ever rains.
We also find that the air is clear, surprisingly for a large city. Where we are from it's polluted alot of the time. And we are sick in the winter non stop. Cold and wet. So Vegas is our destination. Ready for nice weather, sunshine and warmth.
Hopefully this has given some perspective.
But, don't worry, it's not scary, it's just different from where you are. Once you get there and get used to everything, you will be fine.
Enjoy the adventure, life is just one big adventure, relish it, embrace it.
There is a song that says,
"You can only learn so much in one place, the longer you wait, the more time that you waste."
Life is an apple, take a BIG bite and enjoy it.

I have driven there from California and from Utah..Roads are fine..The town itself is gaudy, neon lites on all the time..the place never sleeps, but that is only the touristy part..you will probably live in the outskirts and that is like any other town..enjoy, think of all the new friends you will meet.
