Any company asset provided to an employee is the sole property of the company & the company is responsible for the insurance and signing/renewal of annual maintenance contracts of these assets.

If the theft has happened due to negligence on the employee's part, the employer may have an option to recover the cost from the employee. Going forward the company can very well recover the cost from the Insurance company,

Please check your company policy regarding utilization of Company Assets. If there is no policy as such, an employee cannot be held responsible & hence employee cannot be forced to do anything against his/her accepatance.

I don't understand your grammar? Did you rent it for 1-2 years or are you making payments on a laptop that you had for 1-2 years? If you were renting the laptop, you have to pay for the 1-2 years and surely the store will have you replace it if it is stolen.

If you're buying it and making payments, then I'm sure you still have pay for it entirely. Otherwise I can go buy a laptop, make small payments, and then claim it was stolen and not be liable to pay for the computer.

If it doesn't say stolen then you shouldn't have to pay for it because it is not part of the written agreement. But that is assuming you have proof it was stolen other than the fact that it is missing.

When a company property is assigned to you, you need to ensure its safety (free from lost/theft). Check with your finance department if the laptop was insured. If not, you may have to abide by the company's policy that is to buy them a similar unit or pay cash upfront. Check with the company laptop supplier how much would it cost today versus two years ago. It should be cheaper.

THE COST OF LOSING A LAPTOP: A 2009 Ponemon Institute research study indicates the average value of a lost business laptop is nearly $49,246. Ponemon: "This value is based on seven cost components: replacement cost, detection, forensics, data breach, lost intellectual property costs, lost productivity and legal, consulting and regulatory expenses. You are responsible. This is a company tool and you are responsible for it.

Accept it, or kiss your job good bye.

That stinks!

However is losing your job worth the cost of the laptop?

(they may fire you for another reason)

Have them turn the report in to their insurance and let them deal with it. Bullying you doesn't help and it's not right. If you have an HR program report to them the situation.
