How a space craft changes its vectors to traverse from one orbit to another while ascending and descending?

They have small rockets called thruster rockets, mounted in key positions. Even satellites have them to help them from falling out of orbit. With zero gravity and low resistance, it doesn't take much to drastically change direction.
