my cousin (who had come to america in highschool) graduated from highschool and went on to a local college. she could not keep up with the schoolwork there and decided to take a "break." there are some other colleges where she can go for 2 years to get an associate's degree. is it possible for her to start over even though it has been more than a year since she left?

she has to call the registrar at her school and ask -- different schools have different policies for students who have credits but have quit before finishing.

some places actually have "expirations" on their credits if the degree is left unfinished, but most places do not.

she has to call and ask, every place is different.

Yes, it is possible to start after taking a year off, because I took two years off after goning to a community college, of which it took me many years to get through, and then I had no problem getting into a four year school, I probably does not matter if she gets an associates degree first, because the schools go by the gpa the student had at the previous school and what courses they took and how they did in most of the courses.

Yes, a lot of students take 'breaks' from college study for whatever reason. I did it because I needed to do some other things before taking school seriously. She might have to re-apply. She should call her colleges registar's office and see what the policy is. If she wants, she can try transfering to another college too.

You can't just start over at the same institution. You can start over at another one and not ever mention the old one. Even if she waited thirty years and went back she'll still have an academic record there.

Sure. A year's not that long...-At least not where education is concerned. She'll be fine.
