My best friend called me today and when I asked what she was doing she said feeding her son. Her son turned one this month. She stated he had ate a whole ham sandwich plus have of another sandwich, 2 cups of yogurt and some cookies. She said he was still crying for more food. I told her I did not think he was hungry as that is more then I can eat as an adult. Do you think maybe shes feeding him to much? Every time I talk to her he is eating. Just a little concerned as I do not want him to have weight issues later but do not want to say anything to my friend in case maybe this is normal?

I know this is my friends baby. I'm not trying to take control in any way. Just want to be a good friend. Sometimes other people see things you do not and you need them to point it out. I just wondered if this was something to bring up to her. Shes a first time mom and may not know shes feeding him to much. No need to be rude.

Does he have a weight problem now? If not perhaps something else is wrong. You could gently work into the conversation that he seems to be eating a lot and not gaining any weight and perhaps he should see a doctor. Perhaps he's just at that stage where he is growing at a very fast rate.
If he is overweight already I don't know what can do without sounding like you're meddling. Of course it would be a shame if he became overweight at the age of one but I don't know what you can do about it. Maybe you could start a discussion about healthy diets for children and refer to some articles or books that you "found" about what children his age should be eating.

Children eat alot because they burn more energy than us adults. A normal child eats at least 3 meals a day and 2 snacks and can still be hungry. You might try suggesting that she gives the child oatmeal and a fruit cup in the morning as breakfast, a sandwich and fruit cup in the afternoon and a nice wholesome dinner in the evening.....bananas are also a good source of energy for snacks....my daughter eats alot too....but as long as its not unhealthy or greasy stuffed foods he should be okies. And as long as his pedetrician says he's healthy..its okies.

He could well be crying for attention or even something else completely and she's mistaking it for hunger. I agree with some of the other suggestions. Ask yourself if the child seems under/overweight. She's your friend, so I assume you spend a fair amount of time with her and the child. Keep your eyes open. If it were me, I'd casually mention that it is more than I eat. Ask if he's been checked out. To me, that is a lot of food for that age group.

I think she's teasing you. One year olds dont eat ham sandwiches, at least no one year old I've ever met. My experience (I'm not an expert of course) one year olds have mostly formula or breastmilk, and additionally cereals, pureed fruits and vegetables (or jarred baby food) and possibly more solid type foods like bananas, egg yolk or maybe ice cream. But even one year olds shouldnt have full fat milk/dairy products like yogurt or ice cream because their digestive system is not mature enough for whole cow's milk. I hope that she's joking with you.

not only is that hard to believe. its completely out of control.. my five year old niece who lives with us usually eats half a sandwich and maybe two cookies plus a glass of milk she'll hardly finish..
if he's eating that much it just doesn't seem right to me
edit
I will say that is only her lunch, she also eats breakfast, a snack before lunch, usually fruit, a snack before dinner and then dinner before bed. she is also a very active child, so if he's really really active, i could be wrong.

It depends on the child and his nutritional needs. I do agree with one of the answers, saying that it might be the only time she pays attention to him. Comfort food maybe or eating out of boredom. Good luck

Not necessarily weight issues. It may be a digestion track infection that makes him feel hungry. Otherwise, it could be that he wants attention from her and the only way he gets that is when she is feeding him.

That's more than I eat too ... I'm not a mommy yet or a pro, but that sounds like a WHOLE lot for a 1 year old, even for a 5 year old. When you see these really obese youngsters that their parents admit they just fed them too much, you wish you could have stopped them earlier.
I could be wrong, but it's just my gut feeling. :)

Yes it sounds like a little to much food for a 1year old. But every kid is different.
