A student, Leanne, is given a problem: "It takes Moe Vie 15 minutes to drive to the theatre. He will spend 90 minutes watching the movie, then drive home. How long will the entire trip take?
Leannes solution is:

Leannes answer is that the trip will take one hour and 20 minutes, you are the teacher, how do you respond?

I do realise the correct answer is 2 hours, not 1 hour and 20 minutes. What I am after is what, as a teacher, one would do to aid the student?

It should be 120 minutes, which is two hours.

I would take a clock with the hour and minute hand on twelve. move the minute hand according to each action and the time involved. When they can see that one time around is 60 and not 100, that makes it easier for them to understand what 90 minutes is. I might even mark off after each part and at the end go backwards to show what happened.

I suppose it depends how young the student is. My best explanation without knowing age is reminding her ":" is not equivalent to a decimal point. Also, reminding the student that this is a good example where units are important.
Since the numbers she is adding are minutes, the result is going to be in minutes.
120min.
So, now she needs to use a conversion to turn it into hours
120min* (1hr/60min) = 2hr
