Normal wear and tear. If you've ridden much at all during the season then you have more than enough hours on the engine to have hit Honda's first recommended top end replacement.

Check your manual. Seems to me that the last time I looked at one for the CRF450R Honda called for a piston and ring change at each recommended oil change. Every 30 hours maybe?

Which seemed a bit odd...who leaves their oil and filter in that long? ;)

If you change the oil and filter often, they'll last forever. Yamaha Raptors do the same thing. But the owners rode them, till the oil was black water.
If you ride hard, change the oil and filter twice as often as the manual recommends.
