I am wondering if there was possibly a link between how he was raised and his actions at VT. I wonder if his parents really knew how much hurt he was experiencing inside, or the kids that made fun of his speech.

Each and every one of us is, to some extent, a product of the environment in which we live. Some of us inherit the best and the worst of our parents traits

But all of us have an inherent sense of what's right or what's wrong, we don't have to learn that from our parents, our teachers, these are just common sense considerations.

Our individual capacities to withstand bullying is something that we all have to cope with as individuals and it is in this area of public behavior that society is partly to blame. It is something that we can all do something about but we don't seem to have the will to collectively come together, we are too consumed with our own comfort.

So the next time you're tempted to join in with the bullies, why not step back and refuse, better still, knock the bully on his or her butt.

Its really likely that his actions stemmed from how he was raised. Its really sad, that a person would ever do this. He probably lived a very bizarre life. Considering he may have had a troubling childhood, and bullied at his high school. The parents may have not been there, who knows. It was obivous to me through his play writing and the videos that he was deeply hurting inside.

There was definitely a connection. The kids probably had some idea what they were doing, but they're teens and teens usually don't care about anyone but themselves and don't often stop to consider the consequences of their actions. But that's teens, you can't really fault them.

The parents were probably more focused on doing and getting what they wanted that they didn't care about the kid's needs at the time they were hurting the kid. Most parents like that will NEVER admit to doing anything wrong. They think it's not as bad as their victims say or they say "I did my best" but they're never honest with themselves about how they treated their children.

Having said all that, in NO WAY does this excuse this gutless coward's actions. Thousands of people get abused in this world and thousands get help dealing with the abuse. He had NUMEROUS chances to get help and didn't.

He's scum and I hope he's rotting in hell.

The shooter was South Korean. The cultural impact can be huge. S. Koreans may not favor psychiatry or believe mental health programs work. The language barrier might also have an impact. I heard the parents can't speak English. He may have felt isolated at home..an "American" teen in a S. Korean household.

I thought maybe he had been sexually assaulted by some kids at some point in his life. My family is Japanese and when it comes to mental health issues they are not familiar with any of it. I wonder if his culture kept his parents from recognizing trouble. I was terrorized in school due to my ethnicity so I wonder what he had been through his whole life. Very sad for all parties involved.

No, I don't think there was much if any connection between the way he was raised and his actions. His video shows clear paranoid ideation of the most malignant kind; the thought everybody was trying to make him miserable for their enjoyment. Nobody did this to him; it was caused by a brain dysfunction, a mental illness.
I think his parents are as much victims of this as the families of others who were killed. It was not their fault.
