someone obviously from elsewhere, who's frowning over a map,

do you stop to help him without being asked?

Not usually, I'm very bad giving directions! I know my way around, I rarely if ever get lost even in a strange place, but I just *go* places... I don't ever look at the street names of all the streets in between here and there... I know where many area stores and businesses are and I could walk/bike there with my eyes closed (okay, not counting other traffic :)) but I don't consciously notice and remember the exact names of the streets, or the number of side-streets. So I couldn't explain to a stranger. Although I guess if they got a map I can point it out on there, I'm good with maps... just hope they won't ask me to just tell them, I can't do that!

Yes, I would stop and help them if I could. If I couldn't help them then maybe I could make a phone call for them to help them on their way...oh, yes, without being asked. I would ask them if I could help them in any way.

Doing that would leave a favorable impression for the person.

And, it would make you feel like a better human being.
