The song is called Mary Jane's Last Dance and all I know that has done it is Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and Marti Pellow.

tom petty definitely did that song.
you might be thinking someone else did it because of all the rumors that the red hot chili pepper's "dani california" was a rip-off of "mary jane's last dance".
