do i need software to backup my entire system or is there a way to do it from xp?

You do it from XP or any other Windows op sys by cutting and pasting files from your hard drive over to the external drive.

If you want to grab the entire contents of system in one operation you could buy GHOST for under a hundred bucks and let it make a disk image of the system onto the external drive. That is useful if you need to get everything but is useless if you want to just restore a specific file.

The best way is using good backup software like Acronis True Image Backup...
This makes an EXACT copy of what's on you HD and or Partition...as a matter of a fact one of the things this program does is HD cloning...
I've been using this for years and just Love it!!! I can restore my C partition in less than 10 mins with all my custom settings, patches, updates, drivers, everything! intact...

No, if your external drive have support the XP (actually every it does). Just Copy - Paste your Data in Hard disk to external.

If you mean files and folders, just drag them to the external drive and select COPY. (not move)
You can also copy / paste. (not CUT / paste)

If you mean your entire hard drive including your operating system you want a program call Ghost by Norton or a similar program.
