If you have f(5) just plug in 5 for every x to get


7(5)^2+9(5)+8

The answer is 5 since you're replacing x with the value 5.

F(x) is a statement saying that whatever is past the equals sign is dependent on the x value that is inputed into it. You replace the x in F(x) with a number value to say that you are solving the function for that value to get a y value:

So if you plug in 5 for x in F(x) you plug in 5 for every other x you see in that statement, simple as that.

The answer is 5, all you do is take the 5 and substitute it where the x is in the top problem.

you put 5 in

notice that f(x) simple means that what ever your replace x with in parentheses, you'll replace the x's with in the equation
