You must be cognizant of the meaning of ally. Countries ally with each other when it is determined to be in their own best interest to do so. In some possible scenarios China and the U.S. could well be allies. So could the U.S. and Russia. So could Russia and China. It really depends on the circumstances. But friend? Probably the only countries that meet that standard are the U.S., England, Canada and Australia. The bond seems stronger among these countries than any other . Perhaps it is the common history or language, who knows?

Don W, Vampire 1, Stoney, Jacob W, I liked your answers!

The position of the government of China doesn't necessarily reflect the feelings of its people, anymore than the position of our government necessarily reflects our feelings. China's attitude toward us will change, as will ours toward them, as our respective necessities and circumstances change. I have no animosity toward the people of China, nor do I think they have any toward us: We're probably almost all a bit too busy trying to live our lives to give one another enough thought to have arrived at a serious assessment or formed a serious opinion of each other, as people.

My only concern is that American business and industry are improving Chinese life by improving its economy, which I think is a good thing, and in the process are enriching ithemselves at the cost of our ecomony, which I resent immensely.

The record of history seems to indicate that prosperous nations and prosperous peoples are content to live and let live, so I'm not unhappy that China is acquiring a stronger economy and that her people are beginning to be able to live a slighty better than hand-to-mouth existence.

But I'm incensed that the prosperity of China and her citizens is apparently being achieved by systematically demolishing the prosperity of our country and many of our people.

Also, I'd like to be able to buy an old-fashioned wind-up alarm clock, a nice pair of LEATHER shoes, and some frozen fish and shrimp that were made, or caught, in the USA -- not in China.

At the moment, I think it may be more accurate to say that the US is China's friend and ally, certainly not only its trading partner but the architect of its rising standard. What inscrutable China is to us I do not know. But I do know that our government and our business and industrial communities have pretty well thrown US to the wolves!

When it comes down to it I don't really consider them to be a really close ally like Great Britain or Japan. That is why I think the government is trying to become a big part of their economy so they cannot do anything to us without their economy collapsing. But I believe we must beware of them anyway.

I would love to travel to China someday though it seems fascinating with its amazing rich history.

Well, I would say that US is best friends with like, Britain, japan, etc, but I definitely think that China is included in that. It's just that if North Korea bombed anywhere, it would be China, so China can't just be all calm thinking North Korea won't do anything bad to them. That's why China is kind of trying to help out North Korea, but it's okay. At least I think so.

Its peacefull co-existence for now, and productive trade relations too, and some wonderful individuals too, but something will eventually change...hopefully democracy and human rights there, and hopefully not take over the west with their one party dictatorship. Just look at their takeover attempts over Tibet and Taiwan ! We can't fully call that country allies until they allow democracy and stop killing pro-democracy people and using their young healthy bodies as a source of involuntary organ donations.

not me.

China is just as much of a "friend and ally" as Mexico is. Both would gladly stab you in the back.

I don't think China thinks they are our friend and ally, so that leaves just you, if you believe that.

This is a dog-eat-dog world. No one is really an ally. Everything is done for convenience and, of course, profit.

The Chinese are okay and friendly people. But don't cross them.

China is our ally because we can't afford to have them as an enemy, but I wouldn't call them friends.
