People have become more health conscious; I mean about their own health and care a damn about others, except picking on smokers. For instance, they don't mind a smoker smoking outside their presence. Because they are afraid of second hand smoke that is more harmful. Had they picked on me it would have saved me my bypass operation a decade ago. Smoking and drinking are as dangerous as narcotics and mood altering drugs banned by government. The state is afraid of the society that has a tradition and custom with related emotions and lifestyles attached to these two things; hence it is thinking twice to put controls on them. At least society should realize and withdraw them from our cultures. About many other things they ought to have picked on, well, it is for themselves to decide.

Smoking affects not only the smoker, but also those around him or her. Anyone who smokes made that choice. I have asthma because my parents smoked. I didn't choose that. The smoke from cigarettes make clothes and other things stink. Second hand smoke CAN cause cancer. Look at Dana Reeve. Smokers can get cancer and lose their lives. That is probably the most devastating reason. The two year anniversary of the death of a friend is coming up. He smoked and died of lung cancer. His wife is still grieving.

Because smokers lay down and take it that's why. Easy, weak targets with no backing other than from their fellow smokers. I don't know of any non smokers who are standing up for smokers "rights". Now quit smoking!

It's one of the few habits that directly affect everyone else. As an ex-smoker I know how it feels to get hassled. However, the smoke produced by cigarettes travels everywhere and detracts from everyone's health. I don't mind someone smoking their own life away, just don't take mine with it.

I think its because well smoking is an easy thing to solve andthats why people bother about it so much and the second hand smoke. It'sas simple as telling people to stop smoking but yeah the addiction and stuff but its easy then you have the bigger problems like world hunger, global warming and stuff. People will only do something if you make it wasy for them... so here's an example someone needs to get across the street and the light is half a block away... they'll just jail walk

Some people are, of course, bothered when subjected to cigarette smoke. Others just like to make fun and imply that smokers are stupid. I suppose picking on others gives them a false sense of superiority.

You know, a ton of people are killed by drunk drivers but drinking for some reason is glamorized and seems to be "in" whereas smoking right now is "out". Go figure ...

I hear you. I quit, but I used to smoke 1 1/2 packs a day.
Nobody ever gets yelled at for the secondhand smoke coming out of their car's tailpipe. Stick your head down there for a few minutes and you'll die a lot quicker than a smoker will.

People pick on everyone, but smoking, as opposed to drinking (with the exception of drunk driving) and overeating, is a habit that affects others negatively.
