That is not true. My cousin who is married for 20 years is now at the height of her career. She is doing a regional job, high flyer and travels bi-weekly. Even earning more than her husband now!

And where did you get this information? My income after I married was more than what it was before I married (as a result of promotions and such).

But, I imagine there are women who do make less money after they marry. Some, after having children, reduce the number of hours they work (at a ‘job’ that is, although they are certainly putting in many hours at home).

In addition, many married women miss out on career opportunities due their time constraints and family obligations.

When you’re single if you’re offered a higher-paying job that requires occasional overnight travel, you can take it, because you don’t have a family at home that you have to take care of.

If a single woman is offered a higher-paying job that requires a long commute, she can take it, because she’s not rushing back to pick up the kids from school/daycare.

If a single woman is offered a higher-paying job in another city, she can take it with no concern for how a move would affect anyone else (hubby and kids).

If a single woman needs to work overtime after hours or on weekends, she can do it (which very well might result in a bigger pay raise or even a promotion), because she doesn’t have a family she has to worry about.

I could go on and on.

Some people speculate that married women have children and since they are usually the primary caregiver (no fair, but there it is) they either stay home or take jobs that are more flexible about hours - coming in late because the child was sick, leaving early to take him to a doctor's appointment, etc. (I know - men could do all that but they rarely do) and those jobs are rarely high paying.

During one consulting gig that lasted over 2 years, I saw a few women like this in a mortgage banking setting. The single women just got promoted whenever, while the moms would be 2 hours late because their kid barfed on them and they had to go back home and change or take him to the Dr. or go get him from school early due to illness. All legitimate issues but they never got promoted.

Generally, Generally. I had to say it twice because invariably someone will write something like, "I am married and I make more than all of the single women in my office combined".

Generally women who are married are not as comitted to their careers as single women and men. The generally need more time off than their counterparts and are less reliable. Like when the babysitter is sick or there is a dance recital at school, or he hit his head on the playground.

To be valuable to your employer you need to make your career your top priority. If you want to be a mother then it is very unlikely that you will make it too the top at your company or in your chosen profession.

I am not saying that being a mother is not a noble thing it most certainly is. Try to remember that this is a generalization and like news stories this is based on an average of the entire population. Yes there are certainly mother who make millions but most mothers do not and are generally below average wage earners. I am not saying that they are below average human beings however.

Because men don't choose partner's based on their incomes.

Women do.

Because married women have no goals. They get lazy. In marriage, career, everything. That's why most men cheat!
