I am thinking of upgrading my MacBook's RAM but I don't know which would actually go faster. I have the option of having two 512 MB cards or I can have one 1 GB card and one 256 MB card. Which one would actually go faster? Logic tells me the latter of the two but I don't know about the dual inline stuff built into the MacBooks does anyone know which would do the job better?

The latter would definitely be more, but may not be faster. RAM is rated at speeds, they are usually backward compatible, so if you get some memory that is faster than what your computer is designed to go, then it will go as fast as the computer allows. You need to find out the Front Side Bus speed of your computer, or FSB. Then find RAM that is the same speed. FSB speed will be 400 Mhz, or something like that, but the memory will say it is like pc2400, you need to ask how fast the memory is in Mhz and match it to your FSB speed.

If you get memory that is slower than your FSB speed it will work, however, you can only go as fast as the memory and won't be using the true potential of your computer, even if it is a larger amount of memory.

The amount of RAM you have doesn't determine how fast the RAM is, you can have a stick of 512MB that is PC4200 and then a stick of 512MB that is PC2100 and the PC4200 will run because it's FSB (Front Side Bus) speed is faster, 533MHz facing a 266MHz of PC2100, depends on the speed of your RAM more than how much is on each stick you have. Hope this helps!

I don't know much about Mac's hardware, but 2x 512mb in dual channel would be a little faster than 1.25gb in single channel
