I'm talking about most modern cars that display fuel range based on the amount of gas in the tank.

It gives a general indication of the amount of fuel you have left. There is a float in the gas tank that will go up and down with the amount of gas, it changes the resistance of the rheostat and the voltage is sent to the gauge and it will raise or lower the gauge needle, showing the amount left.
I try and never let mine get below a 1/4 of a tank. That way I always have enough gas to get somewhere if I need to in a hurry.

It becomes more accurate the emptier your tank is.... for obvious reasons, however, it calculates the range according to the gas mileage you average and updates every quarter mile usually. It also depends on how "uniformly" your commute is.. example, if you are usually driving highway or city cosistantly, it will give you a very accurate reading. If you usually drive highway, and all of a sudden are stopping and jetting off the original "range" you got will not even be close.

Depend on your driving habit. If you drive like me then the answer is no. I like to hit 90mph then hit the break a lot when I come up close to the car that is going like 60mph.
