The people of the District of Columbia moved a step closer Thursday to gaining voting rights denied to them for more than 200 years. But the legislation passed by the House on a 241-177 vote faced a veto threat from the White House, which said the bill was unconstitutional.

Because the citizens of D.C. are mostly Democrats, so the Republicans call it "unconstitutional" just so they can stay in power.
If the D.C. majority was Republican, I guarantee that they would be clamoring to get D.C. their vote.

It's not "Democracy" that was voted down, it's all of the socialist "Free Ride" program abusers. Face it, this country was founded on two basic principles: Christianity and capitalism. Neither of which the democrats have faith in. If they did, they'd know that social programs such as Welfare only serve to enslave. It's giving them a fish instead of teaching them to fish. It make them 100% dependent upon the government. And, while I still have my reservations about Washington himself -- he believed firmly in isolationism to the degree that he found it sensible to pay off terrorists than to confront them, still, I believe Madison, Jefferson and Jay had good reason for not allowing political vote so close to the main seat of power for this country. Maybe it has something to do with "District" instead of "State."

Your question is a lot too well-known. almost all of republicans do not and have not. in basic terms as almost all of democrats do not regardless of if a handful do. And particular, there are democrats that hotel to violence. the female that pulled a knife on an anti-abortion protestor and the recent Black Panther social gathering putting armed and uniformed adult males exterior polling places as an occasion.

DC is not a state - nor should it be - Let the DC residents move to a state. DC is a non political landscape to allow our elected rulers to govern with out being influenced by local or state rules and regulations

Probably just politics. If D.C. was a mostly Republican district all the Democrats would have voted against it.

I think you need a refresher civics class. When something is unconstitutional it is not within the bounds of American democracy. Republicans are, yet again, supporting the Constitution.

This bill wouldn't make DC a state, just give it one stinkin' vote in the House, out of 437.

Unfortunately I have to agree with the White House on this one. (Hey when they are right, they are right. As seldom as it is). To allow DC to elect a voting member of the House an amendment would have to be made to the Constitution.
