A light spray with clear acrylic can fix the chalk when it is finished but to build up several layers can cause chipping and total loss of the design, also, a heavy coat can cause running.
until then, lay a piece of paper the same size over the chalk drawing as a blotter. roll loosely and bind with a rubber band.

I do work with pastel-chalks on walls... I use a fixative I bought from Aaron Brother's Art-Mart, and have also used hair-spray.

Good luck !

Spray fixative. But if you're going to keep working on it, then try the workable version and not the permanent kind.

Or you could just hold it a portfolio or tube to keep it from rubbing up against anything.

I use hairspray too, make sure you hold the can a decent distance away when spraying (I found this out the hard way!).
