"Cho" ... as in the Virgina Tech shooter.

It's really just his "buddies" who are calling him that and they actually are doing it to his face, not just behind his back.

His name is Kang and he's a really nice guy, but I don't know him very well.

Would you be offended if you were him? Or what if you just heard people calling him that?

When my friend told me about it (as if it were hilarious) I was pretty shocked/taken aback that people would consider that funny. I actually think it's pretty messed up.

I didn't say that Kang has no problem with it. I actually do not know how he feels about it either way. I don't feel close enough to him to ask such a personal question. My friend who told me about it said he can't tell if Kang thinks it's funny or not.

YES. That's both offensive and racist. It's also tactless to use this tragedy for cheap laughs and then to do it at another race's expense is just deplorable!

I think if your co-worker doesn't find it offensive it's because he doesn't want to be confrontational and is afraid of creating a conflict.

If I were there I would totally speak up, even if I wasn't the brunt of the joke. Coz that is just wrong.

It's not only offensive to Kang, but offensive to those who's lives were taken as well as those who lost a loved one that day. A lot of people can be affected by one joke. Especially one that shouldn't be said in the first place.

It isn't my sense of humor, but I don't know Kang and how he is responding to it. You might want to approach him and apologize for the Cho reference, and get a chance to see how he feels about it. He may or may not be offended, and if he is, it will give him a chance to share with you. Then you might approach the "buddies" with some advice to knock it off. If they refuse, you might remind them that using racial epitaths and causing a hostile environment can be construed as racial harassment, and you wouldn't want them to lose their jobs on a joke - if that doesn't shut them up, I don't know what will.

It's very messed up.

This is how racism begins. Remember 9/11?? Muslim/Indian haters everywhere. When something major happens in the news, the race is always targeted. I was actually afraid to get out of the house because I was brown, and I have been racially abused before. American public and media controls everything in the current society...it sucks. It's like we don't have our own mind anymore...

That is very wrong!!!! Being labeled a killer is not funny...especially now. You may not know him well, but sticking up for him shows you are a better person than those that put that "label" on him. Ask your co-workers what grade they are in....lol..and see if they laugh? I hope they don't get by with that for long, maybe management should step in??

Yes, it is wrong. If I were him I'd say something. The offenders could get in trouble. Also, if it bothers you I'm sure you can say something. I know with sexual harassment you don't have to be the victim, if you witness it and it offends you it still counts. I of course do not know your work environment so only you'll know what's best to do.

Yeah, that's not cool. One crazy Asian man does not account for an entire civilization of perfectly sane Asians. Find out what they hate being called and call them that for a few days... maybe they'll get the point.

Yeah, that's messed up. If I were Kang, I'd be pretty offended.

That is totally not funny. There is a time to poke fun and this is definitely not it. Your co-workers should show some decorum and respect in light of what happened. What if it was their brother/girlfriend/son etc. gunned down by this freak?

I don't know how anyone could joke about that massacre, and then bring someone into it. If I was being the brunt of the joke I would not appreciate it and let it be known to the amateur night flunkies.
