If you do not renew you will stop getting Virus updates or any other support. The programs will be worthless in protecting your computer.

When it is close to time to renew you get some warning that it is about to expire soon. You then click on the renew now area and it takes you to a site were you make your payment not sure what that will be for you because it all depends on what version you have. Sometimes they will ask you if you would also like to pay extra to upgrade to the latest version of Norton which is what you may have to do but after the payment is made they then give you want you need to download with some directions online. You should print everything out in case you have any problems and have to work things out. The other thing you can do is just go to the store and pick up the latest version of Norton or another security program that has a works with vista logo on the box. If you do that you would have to uninstall your old version of Norton before you install your new security program.

I am not quite sure if you are talking about the subscription or the anti virus data base. If it is the subscription it is because it ran out and Norton I believe works on a subscription bases.

If it is the data base it is because the bad guys who write the virus's keep writing new ones and the data base is renewed to reflect these new virus's that are out in the wild.

Gristoft has a anti virus free for home users at gristoft.com I believe is the address.

You can keep Norton updated without paying for it. However, you won't get any support if you get a virus. You'll have to figure out any problems through their help site. I recommend you go ahead & renew - it will save your system in the long run if you ever get a virus.

Because each update provides better protection against viruses and spyware. There are some viruses out there that can actually bypass older versions of anti-virus programs. Also Norton doesn't support old versions of the software any more.

In order to get updated definition files you have to pay them. There is a solution though. There are many free anti-virus programs that work just as well or better. The one I use is free Avg and can be found at: www.free.grisoft.com One word of caution, Norton is very hard to uninstall. You will need to boot into safe mode and uninstall.

You are purchasing another year of virus signatures. All of the "pay-for" AV do that, Norton is just like all of the others. Only with the 3 or 4 free AV could you avoid that.

Rather than renew it, go to ebay.com and you can buy a new Norton Internet Security 2007 for $25. And many of them can be put on up to 3 PC's.

ur anti virus would work fine without renewing it, however you wont be able to get updates.

e.g. if a new virus appeared tommorow and your virus scan expired last week you will be vulnerable to it since u no longer receive updates.

there are plenty of virus scans that are totally free. ther is one by AVG and it updates daily.

You don't need antivirus. You should be okay deleting your antivirus programs and have only one spyware program handy. Here's all you should need:

Windows Defender
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security...

(New) Adaware 2007 Beta
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

If you ever do need a virus program, there are free web-based ones. You can do a scan right in your web browser... but you probably won't need to.
