sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, but I'm going to Italy in mid may with my mother and I'm just wondering as Italy is a very roman catholic nation what your allowed to wear without being noticed too much. for example, is it true that you can't go into church's or cathedral's without your arms covered? and would it okay to wear a near knee-length mini skirt with opaque black tights?

If you go inside a church, may be asked you to cover your shoulder, and better not wearing short trousers (both for men and women), skirt just above knees are OK. That for feel sure; according to where you are they may be more tolerant.
That's for religious places.
As for everyday life, no need to worry. If you ask "I'm just wondering as Italy is a very roman catholic nation" the reply is a straight: definitely not!
You can wear miniskirts, show your belly button (as Italian girls are used to do in recent years), whatever. If something's fine for your mother, sure it will be for people in Italy :)
If you'd like a touchstone, just remember topless are commonly accepted in every public beach by at least a a quarter of century, now :)

Hi, I live in Italy. Okay, to enter a church/cathedral wear pants or a semi-long dress. Yes, your arms should be covered so wear short-sleeve shirts or put a light sweater on. This of course holds true only in churches. Italian girls love wearing mini-skirts and cute tops and high heel shoes when the weather is nice and they go out. They also like wearing low-cut jeans and cute tops with sneakers.

I visited Italy a few years ago, and I didn't wear anything different than usual. knee length skirts would be perfectly fine. I, myself, don't ever wear mini skirts or anything sleeveless anyway...just not my style. I wore slacks and jeans and sweaters (well, it was October when I went).
someone said to me along time ago about not being sure about dress codes....if you're not sure, don't! in other words, daisy dukes and tube tops would probably not be a good idea!

I have been to Italy in May - There doesn't seem to be a dress code. If you just stay on the side of good taste vs Ho..You will be OK.

i'm an italian girl... in the church you must cover the shoulders and you can't wear mini skirt...
