I LOVE TEXAS! I'd move there in a millisecond.

Oklahoma, the Carolinas, Alabama, Tennessee (more than 30 minutes south of Kentucky,) and Georgia (Metro Atlanta) are also nice and I could be very content and happy in any of those places.

I live in Kentucky now and do not care for it at all. The job market and education system aren't that great, and neither are the people. I don't think I'd be very comfortable in Virginia, Florida, or Georgia outside of Atlanta, either.

Such a subjective question! Sounds like you are set on a southern state, and with your admitted love for Texas, it sounds as if you've made your choice.

However, if you'd like to move a little north of that, bearing in mind you've got a lot of ground to cover as Texas is very large, and very regional and each region has its own character, I'll put in a plug for Oklahoma.

Oklahoma is diverse and increasingly modern with a strong emphasis on spirituality. If you prefer a more cosmopolitan atmosphere, I highly recommend Tulsa. If you love living in around lakes and forests, I recommend McAlester. If you need to live close to an airport with major airlines, I highly recommend Oklahoma City, as well as Tulsa.

Housing is relatively cheap, which means the standard of living is as well, and of course that translates to wages. We have no subway system, the one train we have goes to Fort Worth, Texas, and you can beat it there by driving down I-35, so it's really not serious transportation.

Being a southerner, you are aware that both Texas and Oklahoma are part of "tornado alley", which means that if you can make it through the spring you'll be OK. Unless, of course, you can't take the heat. Last August we had 15 straight days over 100 degrees. In the winter, we tend not to get snow but ice storms, which REALLY suck. Well, anywhere you go, there's going to be quirky weather.

Our houses tend not to have basements, interestingly enough, because of our red clay soil, so I'm told. In 2007, Oklahoma is celebrating it's 100th birthday; well, even that's depending on whom you ask! :-)

Oklahoma has a lot of the things the east and west coast have, but cheaper. The best things about Oklahoma are its natural beauty, and the culture of friendliness, for the most part (as with all things there are exceptions), and the inexpensive food and housing (although, there is sales tax assessed on all merchandise; not like Boston where there's no tax if you buy shoes and clothing). The worst things about Oklahoma are the monopolies as far as cable and utilities, and media. One major power company, OG&E, although a few communities have their own. Only one cable company, Cox, but satellite DirectTV and DishNetwork is here. One landline phone company, AT&T, but as far as mobile phones are concerned, Alltel, Sprint, Nextel, and US Cellular are here, depending on what part of the state you come to.

I think there are worse places to live than Oklahoma, but on the other hand, I know that Berea College in Kentucky is a very highly rated school. At any rate, I hope I've been able to help you make a decision.

I live in south Mississippi, about 30 minutes from the coast. I really like it here, I'm going to college at USM, and Hattiesburg is a great place. So many people have unfortunate stereotypes about MS, and I hate that, I'm not saying that there aren't people without teeth here (they're everywhere), but most of Mississippi really is a delightful place to live.

Kentucky, Job market isn't the Best but its getting better, Louisville has been doing ok holding jobs like the ford plant and other counties are working on ways to get more.
most states don't have a great job market.
good luck on what ever you do.
as for the people in Ky they are as friendly as any where else I've been.

I find texans annoying - might as well be New York - they both think they are better than the rest of us -- I live in South Fla now, it is nice schools good, job market good. I was raised in Alabama, it is great a lot of variety in that state from Moutains and cold to the Gulf- good schools nice people. Ga - also nice people, good schools - Mississippi - wonderful people, Louisiana - home of my heart - love the people - used to live in New Orleans - If the job market was better I would go there again;.

My mom lives in Texas and it's too hot. Not as ridiculously hot as Arizona, but too hot just the same. I don't really care for the South. Illinois rocks, especially Chicago!
