So, today in Spanish class. The Spanish teacher was talking about geography; then, the class didn't really understand what he meant, and this is what he said, ''Americans always have problems with geography. Don't you agree?" then our homeroom teacher said, ''I sure do'', . It was like he was calling the class stupid.

How brave are you?

If you have the guts, here is a good answer:

"And spanish teachers always seem to make broad generalizations about groups. Don't you agree?"

That statement is prejudiced in some form. If the word Americans was changed to Blacks, Jews or some other minority, she would be in serious trouble. But it is OK to say that EVERY SINGLE AMERICAN has trouble with geography. That is what she is saying. I'm sure her experience has shown students having trouble, but I'm insulted that she thinks **I** have trouble in that area. Or every single professor in that subject area. I guess a PhD doesn't mean you don't have trouble.

I'd point out her broad generalization as wrong. I'd say I felt she was insulting the class AND all Americans. I'd point out she probably didn't mean it that way, but that is what she said. If she gets mad or tries to make a deal out of it: I'd go to the office and report that she is angry with you for pointing out her generalization. Is this teacher a non-American?

Maybe the teachers were trying to tell you something BUT it may not be the best way of doing it. It is true that many Americans have very little idea about the world outside the USA. Your country is very huge and beautiful, and it has so much more to offer than the other countries in the world. Maybe this is why many Americans are not interested to know about countries outside America. This does not mean your class is stupid. It just means you live in a wonderful country with so much to offer. That is all.

Do not feel bad about the comments made by your teachers. They are only human. Sincerely speaking, your class is not stupid. You guys just need to get inspired to learn about the many rich cultures outside America. I am from Malaysia. Look it up.

Naw he was just agreeing with the Spanish teacher. Because it's true American s always have problems with geography. That's why they always get in trouble and when it's to late they realize that if they woudl know the lay of he land more it wouldn't have happened. I was talking about Americans which means everyone not just your class. SO open your ears and open your brain and listen and learn.

Should of said no offense but maybe your just are not getting your point accross in a good way. If the problem is a continueing problem in a nice way mention this to the principle. You should have a few others names that would be willing to say the same a you. If this does not help have your parent go up to the school and voice your opinion.

Talk to a guidance counselor or the principal about the problem. If he really is mean get some people to help. Have at least ten people go and complain!!! After a while they will get tired of hearing the same things and do something about it. This is a great thing to do when thwy are busy!!! They will get to it after about four complaints because they do not have enough time! Lol!

IT WORKS 4 ME!!!

I think it would be a good idea to talk with your parents and have them advise on you what to do. I would also get some of the other students together that think the same way and schedule a meeting with the principal or dean or whatever administrator there is. I would explain everything to him/her and ask that there be an investigation and something done to correct the problem. Good luck!!

Yes, I agree.

First, I am from the US.

I used to teach Social Studies. I was amazed at some of my students lack of knowledge of geography. For example, one of my students did not know the capital of her own state. She was in 10th grade and lived in the city itself! Another did not know the name of the ocean that borders the west coast and she was born in California!

I challenge you, and perhaps you know, but name all the provinces in Canada. Locate five states in Mexico. Put these countries in order from west to east--Finland, Sweden, and Noway.

Many Americans have a great lack of knowledge of geography.

In the condition of the world today, I am disgusted that an educator would put down America! Report that SOB to the Dept Head and say that you are upset because people are dying to keep our country free and that comment was anti- American. Threaten to tell your parents!

Just speak french and tell him that you didn't link spanish as much anyway. Now joking aside, I think that you should confront him on one of his weaknesses such as math or poor english. I once had a brilliant AP US History teacher that had his phd but he couldn't do simple math very effectively.
