It is an out of date institution no longer carrying the weight it once did. When I am hiring, I would rather see something more concrete and immediate such as, "Volunteered in a soup kitchen 5 hours a week." "Tutored lower class students every Wednesday night."etc...

I think it's a great thing to participate in extra activiities. Phi Beta Kappa has a long history of excellence and achievement at Liberal Arts Univerisities. I'm sure that it won't hinder you in your future endeavors.
It's completely up to you to jion or not.
