Most of the time an institute is a structure for research and connections with people outside the university, not a place in which the university's students take classes.

The word "institute" can be confusing. Though the word institute is more likely to be used for trade schools, there are also many refutable and good colleges / university that have the word "institute" in their name.

ex. MIT Massachusetts Institute of Boston
Art Institute of Boston as Lesley University (AIB use to be its own indepen6 fully accedited school, than it merge with Lesley about 5 years ago for finanical and student housing reasons)
Virginia Institute of Technology
Wentworth Institute of Technology

I know there is somewhat of a technology and art school theme above. Though are just some of the schools that come to mind, sorry if these examples are in the Boston area.

An institute has different accrediation from a college

It doesn't mean it's less meaningful, it could just be they never changed their status

ONCE upon a time Harvard didn't call themselves a college because Europen didn't recognize them as such

The Art Institute of Chicago, NY or BOSTON is probably better for Art than most colleges.

The question is accrediation and status

HARVARD will probably admit you to a Masters program in Fine Artis with any diploma from Chicago, NY or Boston

But they probalby won't admit you with a diploma from Phoenix University in Fine Arts

In order to be degree granting, one tends to need a college or university. Usually institutes are research bodies. Institutes can be within colleges that tend to serve as specialized research bodies focusing on a particular topic or philosophy. Frequently, institutes within colleges or universities will also have some degree programs connected to them. If you are looking at an institute that is not connected to a college or university, it is often best to make sure that it is accredited.
