My son who will be 12 yrs.old next month wants a laptop for his birthday. He is on ESPN all the time checking either basketball stats or baseball stats.
What's the difference between a laptop and a notebook, and which one would be best for a pre-teen?????

You're looking probably for a cheap, durable laptop that will stand abuse (carrying around a lot) and your son doesn't appear to require serious gaming needs of a power laptop. You can probably get away with a low-end laptop from Dell, HP, or just drop into your local Circuit City/Best Buy to see what they have on sale. Whatever you do get, I would suggest a comprehensive warranty if your son isn't very technically inclined. Other than that, really, it's a matter of size (smaller for portability), and battery life (longer is better).

Also, check out slickdeals.net for daily coupons and deals - sometimes you can find some awesome discounts!

Don't listen to Eric H. He's just obsessed with Ms. Dell. Check his answers. He's always posting after Ms. Dell thumbing her down, which is currently being taking care of.

Well, your son would like a Macbook. You can get the Dell that Ms. Dell suggests. Dells makes great computers and are cheap in prices. Mac is for grown up people.

In fact, Dells are in 2nd place in selling computers, while HP recently took Dell's 1st place spot, so buying a Dell is not a bad idea. You can tell from the responses you received.

i reccomend a desktop. one spilt glass of water or a fall off the desk and it's bye bye. I don't reccomend laptops for kids unless it's an old 300 megahertz model you can pick up at a garage sale or ebay for $50

future of computing? My sister bought my nephew a laptop when he was 12. He is an only child with a 120+ IQ. He had it a month. It's now in my closet, with a burnt motherboard thanks to a can of coke. It was replaced with a desktop and he couldn't be happier. You can get a more powerful gaming machine in a desktop for less money. I'm all for laptops...it's all i personally use. Just not for kids. Your wallet will thank me.

Any series off Dell is good, Mac and HP are okay but Dell is fast. easy to understand just make sure you get a good internet connection for all the animated things and such because dial-up is not good for loading things, prolly a laptop would be better , a notebook is more for a college student.

I would definitely go with the eBay laptop that way you can get a little nicer computer for him without the jacked up price. I love Macs but I would not get one for him because they are over kill for what he will need. Also if you have a wireless network in your home(or possibly the neighbor's reaches you house although I would not advice it) then I would make sure it would have some wireless card in it. If you don't have the wireless network option make sure it can get on the internet easily.

I just baught my mom (66) a refurbished laptop that is plenty nice for what she is using it for. It has word processing and an older version of windows. She has it connected to high speed internet and loves it. It was $284 delivered. You can, of course, get more bang for your buck with a desktop because these refurbished laptops at these prices do not usually come with cd burners or dvd roms. Anyway, it's worth a look.

The Dell XPS 1210, which can be seen at this link http://youtube.com/watch?v=XpnhzHcj29o is perfect for your Son.

It weighs only 4 pounds and has bult in microphone and webcam. The microphone allows your Son to talk to friends without additional devices attached to his ears. Very convenient. The webcam allows your Son to view himself live to his grandparents and other relatives, and also allows him to take pictures just like a digital camera.

What makes this particular notebook interesting is that it allows your Son to listen to music and watch Movies without booting up windows. This means your Son doesn't have to turn on the notebook in order to listen to his favorite songs and Movies. Just a click of the direct media button will launch a special feature to benefit this convenience.

The Notebook also features a set of keyboard called " Silence" This specific keyboard is only found on Dell computers, particularly the XPS series.

The reason this little notebook wins best notebook of the year is because it is the only ultra portable notebook that dominates in gaming. That's right, it supports a powerful Graphic card to play the most intense game out there today.

This will allow your Son to play games without having to worry about freezes and crashes.

Please note that this notebook's buttons have blue lights combined. This means the notebook looks resplendent in darkness.

It supports the most powerful CPU. The Intel Core 2 Duo processor offers up to two times the CPU performance on gaming and entertainment systems compared to Pentium M processor technology1 and up to 12% overall system performance improvement over first generation Intel Core Duo processor platforms2.

I own one of these notebooks, and I can't be anymore impressed. I love it dearly to my heart.

The notebook comes stardard with 1GB of RAM as well.

There is no difference between Notebook and laptop. It's the same thing, just different names. For example: Some people Call kenny " Ken"

It is really nice of a mother/father to be thinking about getting his/her son a notebook... Remember that the Internet is the worst place for kids to be, so make sure you have parental control on his computer.

PS. I have fixed the Links for you. Sorry about the inconvenience.

I understand a Mac has a simpler and more intuitive interface than a PC; depends, though, on whether you want to "indoctrinate" him so that he's not ready for the vast difference between Mac and PC...
