besides dell and please not any macs. i need something that works quickly and efficiently, doesn't freeze (or freezes the least amount of times as compared to other brands) and does not crash or get viruses easily. i have had compaqs but i hate them and do not want to get them again because i have had a lot of problems with them such as always being slow, breaking easily, crashing quickly and freezing quickly and faulty battery. since compaq and hp computers are now 1 company, are they the same quality? thanks

p.s. i am always doing multiple things on the computer and need something that won't slow down

i dont want a mac because i'm already used to how windows is and just want to stay with it. don't tell me that i'm contradicting myself-- i'm asking this question for a reason, if i knew macs had the things i wanted, i wouldn't feel the need to ask this question.

i've had this compaq laptop i'm typing on currently for 3 years now...haven't had a problem yet. my brother did have a faulty battery, but Customer Services sent him a new one via UPS Overnight.

I think HP's are a little step up, but very similar.

systems only freeze/crash/get viruses from the user. This almost never has to do with the computer itself, especially coming from the manufacturer. i can see problems arising if you built your own....but that's different.

you may want to look into Toshiba and Gateway. Sony's are nice too, and look cool, but are pretty expensive.

the best prices you'll find on Compaq's and Gateways.

As you said you are doing many things on your laptop, you need to have a some specification for it.
Processor-2Ghz Duel core or above.
DDR II-1 GB SDRAM or above.
Graphics Card-256 mb
Mother bord-with Hyperthreding tech.
Hard disk-any hard disk with SATA
Battery-6 or 9 is better.
Some of the other things you should decide, and see which company laptop satisfy you with it design, look and specification.

When you say that you don't want viruses the first thing that comes to mind is a MacBook or a MacBook Pro and then reading the rest of your wants they all are filled by these two models. So what you say about not a Mac but then wanting all that stuff it self-contradictory.

A good laptoop would be the ones made from sony or apple. Apple laptops are actually really good. I have one myself. Although the software is not from ''windows'' it is still a good laptop. this laptop never freezes and loads pretty fast. hope this tip helps you ^_^
