If the thermostat works it's perfectly safe, if not bouillabaisse.

yes heaters are made to come on when the water temperature drops and go off when the water temperature rises. Even if rarely a heater will fail and it normally fails in the heat on position causing damage to your tank. Just overnight is never much of an issue and they dont really fail that often.

all proper aquarium heaters come with a thermostat (the temperature sensing and regulating device besides the heating coil) so once you set the temp you want the heater to operate at, it's meant to be on all the time. it will switch itself on and off automatically to keep the temp constant. of course, when the thermostat fails, your fish will get cooked. there's always that risk but it cant be helped. turning your heater on and off is even tougher on your fish if they are tropical.

I keep mine on all night, but it depends on the size of your tank. Also, my heater has a built-in thermometer. If your heater doesn't have a thermometer, you'll have to go through the trouble of finding how long it takes for the heater to warm up your tank, how often it needs to be on, and you'll need to get a thermometer and an outlet timer.

So basically, I think you sould spend 5 extra bucks to get the heater with the built in thermo..
