Schindler decides to become responsible for others and their well being when he realizes how inhumane the Jewish and other minority populations( disabled, homosexual, Catholic, and some other religions, basically anybody who didn't fit the ideal) were being treated. During this time many people were told to do what they could the ensure that the Aryan Race( blonde hair, blue eyes, physically strong and healthy) would be viable. They were told to protect what Hitler stood for even if it meant dehumanizing/killing the Jewish and other minority population.
The quote can relate to him because he took care of himself, but he also realized that he needed to protect and defend those who had no way of protecting themselves. He became responsible for their well being and survival when decided to let many in the concentration camps work in the factories that he opened during WWII.
I hope this helps.

Yes, man is responsible for himself, and you can best grasp the meaning of these words, when you are aware that you share this planet and its destiny with all the rest in this world.

By following and spreading this awareness we bring higher standards to every area of life.
