For most Americans, the term 'turtle' describes the Chelonians that are aquatic or semi-aquatic. The term 'tortoise' describes a Chelonian that lives primarily on land.

What type of turt is this? If it has a rather round shell (something like half a grapefruit ) it is a tortoise and does not need to be put in water. If the shell is shorter (more like a pancake) it is most likely aquatic and will need to be in water. Best thing is to google tortoise and then sliders and see which most resembles the one you have found.

1. Wild turtles make poor pets, so please let it go when you are done looking at it.

2. You don't really need to know if it is a land or water turtle, you need to know what species it is, and what the proper care of the species is. You can find many species illustrated at http://www.austinsturtlepage.com and the World of Turtles gallery.

3. If you can post a photo, we can help you ID it and offer good care ideas.

you know that its screwy enough with tortise and turtel. you have land based russian tortise and land based box turtle. then water based painter turtle and snapping turtle. then it gets real bad when you add terrapins. i've always heard of lard terrapins but the dimond back terrapins is water based. if you're going by feet the there's sea turtles that don't have the 'elephant or platapus ' feet they have flippers like seals. basically they're different names for the same thing. but they overlap and are divided at the same time. it isn't really difined but by where you live and what people there say. like aorund here terrapin is pronounced TARpin istead of TERRApin. no i don't live in the hills is just one of those things like tomatoe tomato things. its all regional on how it is viewed. but to answer your question. turtles to me are water and tortises are land and they're both terrapins. water terrapin or land. but they called turtles. it happens. man that's a wierd word, terrapin.....

Their differences depend on the environmental adaptation of each specie of turtles. In addition, you can see their feet.
