I read this one by Steinbeck years ago and I did a report on the story. As I recall...it involved 2 friends a small guy named George and a giant named Lenny who was retarded and slow. George had to take care of his simple minded friend Lenny and worried about him. Lenny would hide mice in his pockets and keep them as pets. He didnt know his own physical strength and would kill the mice by accident. George would daydream that one day the two would strike it rich and live on a farm with 'pigs, chickens, sheep.' etc. and they would live off the fat of the land. Tragedy struck though., Lenny grew fond of the farmer's pretty daughter. He held her too roughly..she screamed and he accidentally broke her neck. George found out and hid Lenny...they fled and the sheriff went on a hunt to catch the murderer who was Lenny.
George knew his friend would face a terrible fate and decided Lenny's life was in his hands. He decided to end Lenny's life himself to save him from being hanged. Sad story.

There are lots of solid themes within this book - - Friendship: or the spiritual love between Lenny and George - The loneliness of the other characters (each different) - but G & L have each other. - Temptation of George by Curley's wife - The simple purity of George - Dreams: every single character has dreams and motivations for their actions - Happiness in simple things - Treatment of the poor/needy Read the book - see how these characters are each introduced. How long is it before their main characteristics are shown? Does Steinbeck tell you this directly - or does he give clues in the way the character acts and speaks?

A very sad one. A big but simple man and his friend begin to work in certain place. The owner thinks that the big man is making fun of him and starts a fight with the big man. Later, the situation becomes very complicated and the big man gets involved in a homicide. His friend decides to kill him because there is no compassion or understanding for him

There are probably several themes. Off the top of my head: It is a protest of the treatment of mentally handicapped people, it is about unconditional love, it is about giving up the one you love in order to protect them from further harm....

I would say, "symplicity versus intelligent analysis", and leave it at that.
