Horizontal white lines are an indicator of stress while vertical white lines are an indicator of readiness to breed. Or at least that's the way the story goes. Some bettas never display either set of lines and some have horizontal lines all the time as part of normal coloration.

Sorry I've never really for once know how to differiate horizontal from vertical..

The '=====' lines are indication of stress for both male and females, the '|| || || ||' lines are indication that the females are ready for breeding loh.

Answer good enough for you?? LOL.

Usually the female will get vertical lines if she's not a light colored betta. But not all females bar up. See picture here http://bettatalk.com/how_bettas_spawn.htm

Your female if she is dark colored will get vertical lines around her stomach area when she is ready to breed. If she is a light colored female you should be able to see the eggs.. They are in a triangular spot right behind her pectoral fins in her belly region. I can show you pics if you email me.. Shaz
