The temperature is definately going up right now, but of course it may stop in abot 100 years and start going down. However, if it keeps going on like this, we will have the problem of global warming and ice melting and things like that. We humans can only stop the rising temperature if it's our fault, and that is for you to decide. Global warming exists right now, but it may or may not be a menace in 50 years.

I can't beleive someone's included a link to the Frederick Seitz petition - this is the guy who for years was employed by the tobacco industry to promote cigarette smoking. He's now in the pockets of the oil industry and attempting to deny global warming. Google him for more info.
Anyway, to answer your question. You're absolutely right that temperatures have been on something of a roller coaster ride. We know more or less what the temperature of the earth has been for a little over half a billion years and during this time there have been four ice ages and four times when the world has been a lot hotter than it is now, and other times when it's been a lot colder as well.
In nature the temperature is never constant and at the moment we're in a warming phase, the same one that caused the glaciers to melt 10,000 years ago.
These natural changes happen very slowly and over very long periods of time. What we've been seeing in the last 200 years is an extremely rapid rise in temperatures - much faster than even the fastest natural changes.
We also know that the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is the highest it's been since humans first inhabited the planet. Since the 1800's scientists have known that carbon dioxide and the other greenhouse gases prevent heat from leaving Earth's atmosphere and any increase in greenhouse gas levels will cause the world to warm up.
Don't worry about your classmates laughing at you. Although I've studied global warming since the 1980's and have researched the evidence myself, I always like to hear sensible questions from people who don't beleive in global warming - yours is a sensible question and it's right that you should ask such questions, this is how science advances. Keep asking away.

Global warming exists. It is also happening on Mars. We know this from observing the poles of Mars. Despite all the talk about carbon dioxide being the culprit to global warming, the increase of xray emissions from the Sun's hot spots is truly the cause. A little perspective on green hous gasses:
The air's compostition is 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen and 1% other. Within the 1 % of other, green house gases reside.
95% of all green house gasses is water vapor, (there is no data on water vapor effect on global warming) out of the remaining 5% carbon dioxide hangs out.
The oceans of the world 66% of the surface holds the lion's shared of stored CO2. Temperature rise releases more CO2, temperatue fall absorbs more CO2.
Mother nature belches through her volcanoes the same amount of green house gasses as all man-made CO2 emmissions.
We have been in a 25 years warming cycle. It is far below the one during the Middle Ages in which Leaf Erickson was able to grow crops in Greenland.
There are those who believe humans are at the center of power on this planet. This is foolishness.
If Earth has a long warming period, countries' borders will be altered. The rain fall will shift in latitudes and dry areas will worsen. People will migrate to better areas and political tension will tighten. People will suffer and die.
Be aware that NOT bringing coal power electrical plants to Africa will hasten greater human suffering. The technology is being used today to pull water vapor out of the atmoshere and making it into drinking water. US Army is utilizing this now.
For Former Vice President Al Gore, I would say build very large plugs and to seal up the world's volcanoes! This would be more beneficial than the socialist propaganda he spews, while he jets around on private jets!
The BBC has a documentary video to consider that you can view on google video. It is entitled: The Great Global Warming Swindel.
I know this has been long winded, however the drums are beating and the truth needs a better publicist.
The science community is a very independant bunch. There is no goose stepping to this issue.
Be aware 8th grader. When an honest question is asked and others ridicule you either, they are of weal character, or they have been caught up in the fanaticsm. Read your history about Nazi Germany during Hitler's rise to power.
Propaganda is a powerful instrument, but truth always prevails.
Best regards,

Global warming is real, since it simply means the global temperature is increasing over time which has been the trend since past century.
What is not real is:
- Global warming is not due to the greenhouse effect.
Sure the greenhouse effect makes the earth warm and habitable so we don't in the cold. But studies have shown that global warming lacks proof that it is caused by the greenhouse effect.
- Manmade CO2 increases this greenhouse gas and man has caused global warming.
Manmade CO2 or carbon dioxide is so small compared to volcano CO2, ocean CO2 and decaying organic matter. The more abundant greenhouse gas is water vapor.
Again global warming is real. What is not real is the misconception that it is caused by man, and it is due to the increase in man-made CO2 causing a worse greenhouse effect.

there is such a thing a global warming. all the worlds scientists agree that due to the pollution caused by humans, that have been released into the atmosphere, the amount of co2 in the atmosphere has increased alot, causing a greenhouse effect which is also melting glaciers, and the polar icecaps. i think your friends are just ignorant to the worlds problems and are only interested in their own little worlds.(believe me, i know, im in high school)

Global warming is highly debated, and very mysterious, if you will. Many people feel that humans are the cause of global warming (an overall heating of the earths natural temperatire), but there are many who feel humans are not the cause. I personally feel that global warming is happening, but not like media makes it seem. Media says that global warming is caused by CO2, which is emitted through many industrial activites. There are several flaws with the theory that it is through humans that global warming occurs. First:: in the sixties or seventies, people in America were freaking out because of global cooling. I'm dead serious, people thought we were going to enter another ice age. But soon enough, the "global cooling" stopped. The earth's temperature fluctuates often, and is very unpredictable. One of the best ways to predict how bad or good the weather will be for the coming year is to look at the sun spots on the sun. The more sun spots, the worse the weather. Another flaw is that Europe went through their industrial age quite a while before America did, and their industrial age didn't incite global warming. Just as much CO2 was emitted, it was just as "dangerous" to the economy, but no global warming occured. Why would it occur now, just after America's industrial age? That doesn't make any sense.
Another flaw is that science does not have many records on weather patterns. We've only been recording weather patterns for about sixty years. So, we can't say for sure that the earth's temperature doesn't just go through cycles. Maybe for twenty years it cools down, then for twenty years it heats up, then for twenty years it cools down again, and so on. We haven't been recording the weather long enough to notice a definite pattern.
Additionally, people look at the amount of CO2 americans are emitting. They see the number, but don't compare it to anything, so they think we are emitting huge amounts. But in reality, we are not emitting much compared to the massive amounts being emitted by natural events. For example, when a volcano erupts, it emits HUGE amounts of CO2, amounts that cannot be compared to what humans emit. There are many natural distasters that emit so much more co2 than humans, that if global warming was due to CO2, then it wouldn't be the fault of humans any more than the fault of all the natural disasters that occur so frequently.
Next, we have to look at why global warming is so publicized. Think about it logically. If someone wanted a government grant to study why the earth's temperature was remaing fairly balanced and safe, they would be laughed at. But, if they have a big issue that concerns the safety of the world, and they are studying it to try to prevent the world from burning, they are very likely to get a grant. No one wants to hear about boring news that the weather has been fine, and will be fine, for quite a while. If they hear about an event that could change shorelines, and parts of coastal cities will be lost, people will be more interested. People also use this to raise money. They know that people want to help out in saving the planet, so they use global warming to boost sales of whatever product they may be trying to sell. Many, many people use global warming for propaganda reasons only.
Lastly, we are coming out of an ice age. People don't realize this, but yes, we are still coming out of the ice age. In a world that is completely out of the ice age, there will be no glaciers. There will be no icebergs, nothing. Just water and land. As I'm sure you know, we still have glaciers and icebergs. And the ice age didn't happen that long ago. In time that we associate things with, it did, but when compared to the life of the earth, the ice age wasn't long ago at all. So global warming can also be attributed to the fact that we are still coming out of an ice age.
Global warming is very debated, and usually people only see the liberal side, that humans are the cause of global warming, and soon the earth will be destroyed by the massive amounts of carbon dioxide we are emitting. However, I hope I have given you a different view, and that you can now look at global warming more objectively, with more information than just the liberal opinion, and the opinion of those that are making millions of dollars because of global warming.
