Yes, you're helping them out.
The ZIP+4 allows the USPS to sort mail down to the carrier route, and can, in some cases, speed delivery. It is not required, but it is recommended, and bulk mailers who add the ZIP+4 are able to save on postage rates.

I honestly do not know.
The 4 digits at the end of the PO Box are usually the same as the 4-digits at the end of the zip code.
I have tried it both ways (I send about 200 claims a day by mail).
There does not appear to be any difference in the time mail is delivered.
I hope you get an answer that will inform us both!

the 4 diget is to break down the zip code area for the postal workers who have to deliver it. When they collect all the mail at the post office they run it through reader machines that seperate the mail by zip and +4. I hope this helps, its more or less the iner workings of the Post Office.

The purpose of the zip+4 is to help the sorting machines send the letter or package to the correct route, and assist the sorting machines in putting into the correct sequence for the carrier

It typically references a Post Office box number. It allows the delivery service to know not only which Post Office to send the mail to but which specific rental lock-box it should go into. If a post office box is not involved, then it just helps the Post Office to narrow down the geographic location a little better in the event of a large population in a particular zip code (such as an individual apartment building or something).
Yes, you are helping the post office by adding it.

The 4 Digits is the address or ID of the local neighborhood delivery location, usually is a green mail box.
When you mail out a letter, you put it in a blue box.
But when the mail man come pick his bag of mails to deliver in a neighborhood, he picks it up from the green box. That green box is identified by the 4 Digits.

Do you mean a postal code? There are hundreds. SW1 for example. Do you mean a telephone area code? The international code for the UK is 44 and the city code is 20.

Some what. The extra 4 digits are a further refinement of where the mail item is going.

Yeah you kinda are. It basically divides each zip code up into smaller sub-divisions so that it can be organized quicker.
