Tortoises are pretty hardy pets. It's the set up that is rather costly. The heat lamp, a proper sized aquarium, the right bedding, the right variety of food, etc.

My father has 2 Russian Tortoises, which are commonly found in pet stores lately, it seems. Here is a care sheet for them:

Even if you don't get that type of tortoise, it'll still give you an idea of what you'll be looking forward to.

A Tortoise is pretty easy to take care of. They don't require much attention and they don't get safe very often unless their living area is unsanitary. I have a russian tortoise, and all he needs is a little attention sometimes. I try to spend more time with him, but it's okay if I don't give him full attention. They are good pets, but they arent cuddly.
The set up is harder than the actual caring. Research the tortoise you will want to be getting as well. The hardest part is keeping the cage clean.
Hope this helps.
